The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou

Image
This week we watched the movie  The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou.  The director used a lot of good ways of producing the film. The way the director tried to use the camera to create a narrative allowed the audience to understand what the director was heading in the movie. I thought a couple of the shots from the film explained the direction that the director wanted to understand. The camera shot that came to mind when they were going through the ship for the first time was a panning shot that did not stop. It allowed the audience to view the entire ship and understand the direction the film was heading.  The clip above allowed the audience to understand that the director was trying to show why the captain of the ship (Bill Murray) was not getting treated as well as others in his field of work. I thought it was interesting to see how Bill Murray's ship focused on relaxing and the same time focused on; creating a movie. One could see how the director tried to show how imp...

Rear window

Image
We watched the movie  Rear Window  in class this week. This movie was about a person who was stuck in a wheelchair but was able to look into other people's apartments as a viewpoint into their lives. I thought it was interesting for the main character to be in a wheelchair it allows the audience to see life through the eyes of the main character as he has to look out of the window. The director of this film allows the audience to interpret many different ideas throughout the film. As a person viewing the movie for the first time, you can see how each window shows something different. I think it's cool to see how as a viewer, you don't see everything for the first time in the film until you watch it again.   I thought the way the director was able to use the camera to create unique shots. One of the shots I thought was interesting was the last couple of minutes of the film. It shows the lives of everyone after the murder was caught and brought to jail. The came...

Understanding the Short Film "Snowy"

Image
When looking into the short film Snowy, one might think it's a cute story about how a person takes care of an important animal. But there is more to it from what I watched. The beginning of the film starts with a person reading tarot cards. At first, we do not understand who the tarot reading is for until we first meet Snowy the turtle. As an audience, we finally see who the tarot reading is for Snowy the turtle. This allows the audience to understand that Snowy the turtle might not be great for him. From that point forward, the movie paints Snowy the turtle's life as very mundane. With nobody carrying for him.  To get this point across that nobody really cares for Snowy the turtle; the director set's up a shot showing the difference between what the people are experiencing and what Snowy is experiencing. The video clip shows Snowy's caretakers over him on a different; floor of the house, eating a nice warm dinner with their whole family. While Snowy the turtle...

Reactions from the movie "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari"

Image
When watching the original film called The Cabinet of Dr.Caligari, I thought the movie was interesting because of how the directors were able to be more initiative for its time. The first thing I noticed while watching the film was how the director used the camera to get new angles. With these new camera angles, it allowed the film to enhance the movie. These innovative ideas that the director used in the 1921 film for the first time are still widely used in today's standards of filmmaking. An example of the innovations that are still used today was recently in the new doctor strange movie. At one point in the film, they use fade-out and fade-in effects to make the movie suspenseful full.  :( This effect was shown in the YouTube video at 2:43 Something that also caught my attention this week while looking at the reading was some of the historical information that we read this week. I felt like it was interesting to learn about the early history of cinematography. It was nice to ...
