Reactions from the movie "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari"



When watching the original film called The Cabinet of Dr.Caligari, I thought the movie was interesting because of how the directors were able to be more initiative for its time. The first thing I noticed while watching the film was how the director used the camera to get new angles. With these new camera angles, it allowed the film to enhance the movie. These innovative ideas that the director used in the 1921 film for the first time are still widely used in today's standards of filmmaking. An example of the innovations that are still used today was recently in the new doctor strange movie. At one point in the film, they use fade-out and fade-in effects to make the movie suspenseful full.

Something that also caught my attention this week while looking at the reading was some of the historical information that we read this week. I felt like it was interesting to learn about the early history of cinematography. It was nice to finally understand the early importance of the film industry and how impactful the early sets have on today's standards of films. I did not realize it when reading the book for the first time. The first movie to ever have the sound and film synchronized was produced in 1927. To me, this was quite interesting to realize how close we are to having films being made it is almost close to a hundred years old. 

What I was able to gather from the book and the film we watched is that we have come a long way from what films originally started as. The movie industry has played an impactful role in what we do today as a society. I feel like if we did not have these original filmmakers do what they did in their original films, we would not have movies like today. With the creation of the original films, these directors paved the way forward for directors to make more impactful films or even an industry that we can go look towards. A lot of these early film studios were just trying to see if the film was the way of the future. In my personal belief if these people did not stick with film, then we would not have the films we have today or even the technology.

  The movie I watched this weekend was a  Marvel  Movie. The title of the film was called  Werewolf by Night . The director Michael Giacchino decided to take the movie in a different direction from most films we watch today. Michael Giacchino filmed his movie in black and white. His decision to make the movie black and white led to a creepy aesthetic of the movie overall. It was almost like an old-time horror movie from universal but filmed by today's standards.  One good example from the film I thought used the contrast of black and white was the clip above. It shows the Werewolf attacking the guards that were supposed to protect the boss. I thought the director did a good shoot because it showed the door slowly closing and how the light was fleeing away in the background while the Werewolf was attacking. Bullet Train

  I rewatched the movie called  Bullet Train;  the director is David Leitch. I saw this movie during Covid; this week in the class, we focused on the experiences of seeing a movie in person versus being alone. So I rewatched this movie alone; I can tell you it was a different experience. The driving point of the film is about trying to steal a suitcase full of money. Each character within the film has different motives; however, they are all getting played by a mastermind. One of the characters in the movie is named Lady Bug, played by the actor Brad Pitt. Throughout the movie, we see why Brad Pitt is Lady Bug due to his luckiness throughout the film. Brad Pitt character in the movie, has an existential crisis about whether or not he is lucky or has horrible luck. Throughout the film, we meet other characters who come from all different walks of life. However, they all encountered each other prior to the job on the bullet train. Pan's labyrinth

    This week in film class we decided to watch the movie Pan's Labyrinth. I personally thought the movie we watched was really interesting. The director for sure had a deeper meaning for what ends up happening throughout the movie. Personally for me watching the movie I thought that every time the Ofelia would go and talk to the other fairy tale monster I thought it was a way to escape the realism of the world around her. This to me gives a specific idea of how a person might go through drastic trauma. I feel like throughout the movie I saw watching that every time Ofelia would see the fairy tale monster or even to travel to other worlds something terrible would end up happening in the real world.  An example of this would be the first couple of minutes of the movie.
