The Social Dilemma

This week we focused on watching the documentary The Social Dilemma. The documentary focuses on how social media affects the world and the people who live in it. The director's main arguments for the film focused on how social media can affect adults, children, and countries. Watching this documentary and hearing what the engineers were saying about making social media platforms made me disgusted with what they could do. I thought the engineers of the social media platforms were somewhat opposed to what they were saying. It is almost like they could get in trouble with what they were talking about in the documentary.

Throughout the film, the director added cuts back n forth between a family and the interviewers. I thought the director did this intentionally to show how social media could impact a family. Especially throughout the film, we see the son constantly looking at his phone. I witnessed that throughout the film, he was getting more depressed every time we cut back from the interviewers. Eventually, at the end of the film becoming, numb to what had happened around him. The film did a good job of adding the algorithm of social media as humans in the phone to show how manipulative it could be. I thought it really added to the dehumanization of social media.

Closer to the end, the interviews push the idea that people need to be careful with social media. I have found a video online that shows a clip from the movie that highlights the dangers of social media. This engineer says a lot about the dangers of social media to the point of how impactful social media is for society. The director of the documentary brings in a lot of complex ideas that allow people to understand the impacts of social media.
