Patrick Turner's Life
Welcome to my first-ever blog for this website today. I will be, introducing myself and what film means to me. First of all, my name is Patrick, or; you can call me Pat. I will be taking you into my mind and what I feel about the films I watch. I am about to lay down some massive background information that will help you understand where I have come from and how the film has truly impacted me. As of right now, I am a junior in college to get a degree in History/Social Science with Secondary Education. Yes, you read that correctly double majoring in college. Some activities I like to do in my free time are watching new TV shows, playing video games with my friends, or even sitting down and reading a book. Some shows that I am currently watching are Better Call Saul and the Sandman. These two shows are two completely different shows. But they have interesting main characters that make you want to come back and binge-watch the rest of the show to figure out what will happen next to the characters.

The Link above shows my favorite documentary that I have watched recently. The director Peter Jackson used original films from the Imperial War Museum archives during World War One. The director changed the frames per second to match what we are used to watching. He also added color to the original black and white film. On top of that, he would also add sound to the film and change the archived footage to something completely new. I like this film because it does everything a historian would want to celebrate the past so that many people can see and understand its importance. I personally also love any movie that ends up with war. It's so interesting to see how each director can represent a large conflict through a film.
Overall I am excited to see what we learn in this class and how maybe I could learn from this class and apply it to my other class or even teaching. Instead of me teaching a lecture or something, I make a film that might be able to convey the same message. I feel like this class will allow me to understand myself better through the films I watch because it would allow me to understand what may be the directors are going through while they are trying to create.Another thing that I might be able to get from this is how a film could impact society. I feel like sometimes the film does not get the same attention as tv. With this in mind, the film allows the director to set up what they believe is correct for them versus I feel like tv tries to sell you something versus a movie allows for a person to sit down and understand without intervention.

I really liked how you not only wrote about the film but the director behind the film. I personally do not think directors really get that much attention. We usually hear "that film with that actor..." I almost never hear about the directors of movies when they are the ones that make the film a success or in some cases a failure. I would also like to know about what a director has to go through to make a film. I am also watching The Sandman and love the main character in the show!
ReplyDeleteIt's cool that you really like history, and how the documentary includes color with old footage. Netflix has a show like that called "WW2 in color" and it is also very interesting, I watch it all the time with my friends. It's exciting to learn about films and how they are directed, which I hope we will be doing a lot in this class!
ReplyDeleteHey Pat. I really liked reading your post. I also like documentary shows and precisely those that are related to the history of the world including WW1 and WW2. I lost count of how many times I have watched documentaries about WWI and WW2. Also, thank you, you just reminded me I had planned to watch the Sandman. I will check it out sometime. I am very excited to learn more about everyone's favorite movies throughout this class.
ReplyDeleteHaven't seen "they shall not grow old" but I do enjoy old war films and documentaries. I remember me and my grandfather watching a bunch of old films and documentaries about WW1 and 2 and will definitely put that film on my to watch list.
ReplyDeleteHello Pat, as someone who also likes history, this was a fun blog to read. I have seen "WW2 in color" and it is a great documentary. I don't really watch shows that much but you mentioning "better call Saul have peaked my interest.
